October 3, 2014 was a good day. The sun was up, the neighbors were quiet, my son was jolly but I was very busy packing, readying my guitar and checking things that I will need for the next four days. On this day me and the rest of PAGANFIRE will embark on a very important event, one whose significant effect on our lives will not be felt soon but definitely will leave its mark for better or worse. After having breakfast with my ever supportive wife (you will come with me next time!), last minute checking and everything else, off I went. The rest of the band picked me up just a few meters from my house and after an hour or so of typical Manila traffic jam we soon found ourselves at the airport, the world’s worst airport for 3 consecutive years, NAIA terminal 3. (though I think it doesn’t deserve that tag hah!) My bag’s zipper broke, the flight got delayed for an hour and 30 minutes, we paid excess baggage were the memorable moments, luckily the ground crew for our airline candidly asked us “sir, are you contestants to Asia’s got talent in Kuala Lumpur tonight?” We were totally dumbfounded and told ourselves later on “ fuck man, we certainly do not look metal at all, maybe we are too wholesome looking and cute” hahaha and so the turbulent flight of 4 hours took off, on the plane also were the Philippines football under 16 all girls team, and yeah this is my first time to travel and the whole process and feel is new to me, Shit, turbulence gave me a headache, not to mention when the plane veers to the left or right, it’s surreal!! Argh!!! Everytime I look out the window I always remind myself of the Twilight Zone episode were a monster is tearing off parts of the plane’s engine and just sits calmly at the wings. Touchdown Malaysia!!! KLIA2 was not as bad or good as expected, I just wish they have more English there, both with the crew and the signs. We almost panicked when everyone’s baggage came out of the damned conveyors, all but our 3 guitars, then we realized it was supposed to be claimed somewhere else, whew!!! Organizer Mr. Hery, picked us up and we were very sorry he, Sen, Muniff and Bob of the KL thrashed crew and RIVERGE from Japan had to wait for almost 2 hours hahaha. It felt good seeing our brothers and sister from Japan once again, specially my bloodbrother Miki san, and of course to finally meet the Malaysian Metalheads who warmly welcomed us to their country! Cheers to them! We took Mr. Hery’s car and along the 1-2 hours drive we had some interesting chats, and noticed How KL is not too different from Manila, we learned that Malaysia has it’s own oil and the prices of gas, electricity and food there is cheaper compared to home, The perks of the third world. Argh!! When we reached the hotel, everyone was jubilant, just after checking the rooms we had photo sessions and proceeded for dinner! Sadly we were split into two groups, we were taken to the authentic Nasi Lemak place, which has been at it since 1973, and took a quick drop off to the famous Petronas towers, which was quite a site to behold this time of night, really cool! After all of this we followed the rest of the maniacs to the famous Jalan Alor/Chinatown street. There we all had stingray, frogs and tiger beer. After a few hours we went back to the hotel bringing the food and beers with us and drank til the morning. Now I know that jet lag is real!! October 4, 2014 KL thrashed!! We were up early and went to the nearby mall where we had some money changed to ringgit and ate breakfast, and saw some things at the mall. I wish we tried out the Durian Mcflurry . Next time we will get you! Mr. Sen took us for lunch at the nearby Chinese resto, killer!! Mr. Kerry of Atomic Death also showed up and I was very glad to finally meet him after knowing each other via letters for many years (he is responsible for releasing PAGANFIRE’s first pro tape TASTELESS REVENGE) And after a few hours more, we went to the venue. KL Thrashed is challenged so to speak, the rain was so hard, there was a muslim holiday, and there was no electricity at the venue (INSIDER SPACE), we have to wait for 3 hours before electricity was restored. Arriving at the venue, we told ourselves that Malaysians have a different standard than what we are used to, the equipment was killer yet they were still complaining, there were distros everywhere, patches, shirts, cds, lps, etc were all readily available at the gig. I regret not buying the Agnostic Front – Cause For Alarm cd!! Argh!! There was a strict ban on alcohol (which the Philippine and Japanese guests ignored!) Walking around I was glad to meet some old penpals of mine Abdul Aziz/Metal Zone distro, and C.S. Wild/Thrashingfist distro, feels good to see them in the flesh I hope they feel the same when they saw me, The gig started around 8pm, the first band were locals and sorry I forgot their name, maybe we were too busy neglecting the merch table and talking to Bos Malik Hanael and the rest of As Sahar, chatting , drinking beer and taking pics etc We went in and checked out RIVERGE as they thrash KL that night, sound was really heavy and they are more tight this time than last year’s stint in Manila. Nasty’s guitar sound is just like Scott Ian’s!! And I kept on calling him Scott Ian for the rest of the night, everyone was in top form, Momo San, Shobe San and the drummer. Riverging KL!! Unholy Rites came next, they played black metal, Iwan Uchida was the axeman and Mr. Hery did the Vox, Good band, although there were sound problems and at times they had miscues the performance was still OK, and the vox at times reminded me of old Mayhem. Finally it was our time to hit the stage, we wasted no time and plugged our instruments, did a very short sound check, and proceeded with our eight song set, the crowd was wild and apparently there were a bunch of Indonesians moshing and headbanging, sadly though stage jitters got the best of me and not until halfway through our set that I was relaxed, next time I will get you Malaysians!!! Luckily enough only my stage movements got restrained but not my guitar playing, and still we will be able to pace it all, and as all of them KL thrashed crew people say we were “very fast and very aggressive” hah! Until next time brothers, I will have a revenge on myself! Argh!!! Kemolorg was next and they feature Mr. Hery again on vocals! This time they play death metal, it was an honor to see the original drummer from the 90’s still playing. I do not know if the present material differs a lot from their old stuff, but it is old school, I have observed though that their set was plagued by sound problems and at times they seem so bothered by it, I even noticed them looking at each other while playing, but that is OK this is LIVE and shit happens, old school death metal is what Kemolorg means!! After their set more negligence of the Merchandise table happens and more people to meet and it was nice to know that most maniacs liked our set, the last band that I watched and last for for the night was INFINITERROR, 3 young lads who worship the technical type of thrash and has the dexterity to play it, they did some covers and most notable of which is FORBIDDEN EVIL but they were not able to sing it, just instrumental, the guitar player did an awesome job. I hope next time they play their own songs instead. The lights then went on, and KL thrashed 2014 was officially ended, but not before everyone was called to the stage and there was ample time for photo shoots, every band, maniac, distro or whoever was still around jumped in. It was an extraordinary experience and we hope to do it again!! Argh!!! We were very honored to be a part of KL thrashed 2014 and with that in mind we all packed our things and descended from Insider Space. We went back to the hotel and then hunted down food, the rain was still going which so we were not able to come back to JALAN ALOR as it is an outdoor type of place so we went to the nearby MAMAK or Indonesian resto, strange food in a not so strange land it was! There were a handful of maniacs who went with us and among them was Jeff disposal, the guy who put out the Beast Petrify/Empheris tapes, Zul, Bob, The guy in Vio-lence shirt, Mr. and Mrs. Vault, Kerry, Mr. Hery and Sen and some more who I missed. The goat meat and beef was tasty. Upon returning to the hotel, our Japanese friends had to say goodbye and go to sleep as they have an early morning flight going to Thailand as they will thrash Bangkok too. It was time for beers so to speak at the hotel entrance, cans and cans of beer were consumed there until ultimately it was Zul of Viniir, Bob, Sen, Hery and Kerry whom we had the last cans with as some maniacs all left home and didn’t drink. Sunday morning was the Muslim holiday and most of the maniacs weren’t around, they all went and celebrated it with their families, and we celebrated it too! Our bloodbrother Malik Hanael (As Sahar) picked us up and took us to his future wife’s house. This is arguably one of the highlights of my Malaysia visit, it feels good to be guests in someone else’s family’s house in some other country! The food was the authentic Malay dish we are all looking for and of course we ate with our bare hands, both chicken dishes (rendang and in tomato puree) was truly spicy! It burns! Kudos to Mr. and Mrs. Hanael and family for the hospitality and the experience!! We hope to do it again very soon!!! After the sumptuous lunch the whole gang with the As Sahar couple and one friend in Anal Vomit shirt stormed the central market, more sightseeing for me,this place reminds me of Carriedo back home and the prices are not that expensive. Here we picked up our gifts for our familes and friends, key chains, shirts, ref magnets etc. most notable for me was the stuff for the kids and the very good Beryl’s chocolates. After a few hours on the prowl and sometime of rest and chit chat, we travelled back to the hotel, then said farewell to each other and had some pictures again with the true Goatfather!! We will do this again soon Malik!! Thank you very much!!! Dinner time has come so went and ate at the café near the hotel, bought some beers and to our surprise Bop, Zul and Hery’s brother were already at the hotel! What was supposed to be our night off became another drinking session bout with our Malaysian brothers! More metal chats, stories and trivia from both Malaysian and Philippine scenes were shared, just before the god damned Bear beer made me pass out!! Argh!! I fell asleep at the lobby, woken up by some Cccchhhiinnneesee guys noise and the noise by the maniacs downstairs I proceeded to the room and snoozed off. I woke up 8am, did some walking across the whole block, and thought of eating at some Chinese resto (but no Malay speak, No food!) and ultimately waited for some controversial Malaysian metalhead to come and do a live interview but he didn’t showed up then he tells us he was there and he returned home, oh well. Ho-hum. After all was checked and packed we (Paganfire, Zul, Bop and Herry’s brother) left the hotel and went to a famous chicken rice ( Nasi Ayam) place somewhere in the outskirts of KL, it was very good and the dumpling soup was exceptional!!! Then our last stop before going the airport was the famous Petronas towers, the sun was up and it was high noon but there were lots of people there taking pics just like us, it was here where Zul and Paganfire bid farewell, but we encouraged him of thinking twice about his planned Manila gig. So what it will be Zul? Hehehe we will see you soon brother! Finally the airport, (Kudos to Bop and Herry’s brother for the send off!) one thing I noticed was that security here is a bit lax than in Manila and the less number of English speaking staff is annoying. Excess baggage again!! Fuck! Tons of people, and here we waited for 2 hours as we were there early so we had chats and sat quietly and recounted our Malaysian experience, and we can say it was a blast!! We will be back!! Luckily the flight was on time, and as we ascend and take our last view of the airport and all the Palm oil trees around it, I was only able to say Thank you Kuala Lumpur, Thank you Malaysia, until we thrash again!! We will be back! You can bet your ass on that!!!
p.s. the 4 hour flight back home was better this time as there is no turbulence, yet we still can’t get over the fact that the food cart always stops in front of us!! And I still think an inflight bingo game will be highly entertaining! Our arrival in Manila was exceptional too as there were rains and we were made to wait for at least an hour inside the plane before we were allowed to alight, due to thunderstorms!! Await the second coming!!
